Roundabouts

I was talking with a friend last week and the conversation sparked a thought that I knew would make a good blog post.

I was talking about when I lived in New Zealand and drove on the "wrong side" of the road. My friend commented that he could never get used to that. I responded that it really wasn't that difficult. He said no, it's not that... it's all the roundabouts that they have.

Thinking about it I had to agree. Americans are very agressive drivers and the concept is too difficult to comprehend. One must be a courteous driver and one that does not tailgate for a roundabout to work. There are some in cities and towns across the country... but not as many as in other countries.

But I think this applies to more than just driving too. It seems like people are more agressive about everything these days. And forget about being courtious... people want their way and they want it now... and all else be damned!

Maybe this is fostered by the intollerence of religious leaders. They don't seems to think that their hatred of other people is bullying!

Anyway.... Does anyone have to drive on a roundabout in their city? Does it frustrate you?

My partner hates when I'm driving and we come upon a roundabout. I love to go round and round really fast shouting "Big Ben! Parliament! Big Ben! Parliament!..."

They're all over DC and between the tourists and foreigners (who can't drive in the rain either) it's a nightmare!

there are 5 in center city proper: franklin, washington, city hall, logan, and rittenhouse. yeah; actually, they are squares, but same difference. just TRY to get thru them at rush hour!

there is also oxford circle, a bit north of center city. a TRUE circle.

in NJ the highway administration is getting rid of as many circles as they can.

true fax!

We have two in Bentonville. One is more a proper roundabout. The other is more a single-lane lazy man's no stop sign kind of thing.

It's fun to watch the crazy people here not know what the hell to do in them.
